|   | The Merano Music Festival was introduced in 1986 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the renowned spa town Merano. From the very beginning the festival set the highest artistic standards and so the Merano Music Festival quickly rose to great fame, making it a point of reference among Europe's festivals.
With its breathtaking mountain scenery and Mediterranean atmosphere, the spa and garden town of Merano has become a rendezvous for music fans from Europe and across the world over the past two centuries. Today the Merano Music Festival form the most distinguished symphonic music festival in Italy.
This year's festival focuses on symphonic and chamber music. And, as on other years the festival also offers concerts beyond the scope of a traditional classic festival. These we call „cross-over“-concerts.
The Merano Music Festival 2009,as usual, includes three independent concert series:
- the symphonic concerts take the centre stage of the music festival. They take place in the Kursaal, a unique example of Jugendstil architecture and one of the most beautiful concert halls in Europe.
In 2009 Charles Dutoit conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Martha Argerich on the piano, Ingo Metzmacher commands the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist and Murray Perahia appears with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra is commanded by
Daniel Harding and Kristjan Järvi conducts the Münchner Rundfunkorchester with Fazil Say on the piano.
- the chamber music concerts „Matinée Classique“ are held in the „Pavillon des Fleurs“
- the venue of the jazz and „world music“-concerts of the crossover series „Colours of Music“ is the Merano Theatre.
